The bay-headed tanager, scientifically called Tangara gyrola, is an elegant bird that boasts a vibrant red head and a predominantly green body. It is a medium-sized passerine bird, measuring approximately 14 cm in length and weighing around 19.5 grammes. This avian species comes in various types, with each displaying unique plumage changes throughout the seasons. Apart from a bluish belly, they also sport a striking golden collar at the back of their necks. However, it is their predominantly green coloration that truly characterizes these stunning birds.
In the past, there was a considerable similarity in appearance between men and women. However, it’s worth noting that the shape of the skull could potentially impact the process of identification.
According to records, it is mentioned that the female specimen of these captivating creatures possesses a head with a rounded shape, while the male counterpart exhibits a rather flat head structure. These enchanting avian beings, adorned with a mesmerizing palette of jewel-like hues, showcase a feathered coat that is notably lighter in shade. Moreover, their captivating visage is highlighted by exquisite golden speckles adorning their heads.
These charismatic avian creatures can be spotted gracefully soaring through the skies and gracing the lands within the verdant realms of Costa Rica, Panama, and various parts of South America, Ecuador, Bolivia, Brazil, and Trinidad. These alluring birds proudly call these regions their home, being native and indigenous to these breathtaking habitats.
The Bay-headed Tanager can mainly be spotted in areas abundant with tall trees within forest settings, especially on elevated terrain, within the upper layers of the trees, alongside the edges of woodlands, and in nearby open spaces where large trees are present.
These feathery creatures primarily dine on insects, although they do indulge in the occasional feast of small invertebrates found in close proximity to lush greenery.
Bay-headed turkeys, known for their distinctive appearance, have a unique nesting behavior. These magnificent birds carefully lay a pair of blotched white eggs in a sturdy nest built on a tree branch. To ensure the eggs are properly nurtured, the female turkeys diligently incubate them for a period of approximately 13 to 14 days. Once the waiting period concludes, the tiny chicks emerge from their shells, ready to embark on their journey to adulthood. It takes these adorable creatures an additional 15 to 16 days to fully develop their wings and ability to fly, marking an exciting milestone in their early lives.
The global population of this particular species has not been fully assessed, but it is believed to be quite significant as these birds are considered to be common in certain regions within their habitat.
